Why Ghana Mineworkers’ Union Is Demanding Stronger Labour Protections Now

Accra, January 8, 2026 – Behind the gleaming gold that powers Ghana’s economy are thousands of mineworkers facing daily risks in an industry transformed by modern practices – yet protected by laws written over two decades ago.

The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) has issued a powerful call for the immediate overhaul of the Labour Act 2003, warning that outdated regulations are failing to shield workers from the harsh realities of today’s mining landscape.

General Secretary Abdul-Moomin Gbana, speaking on behalf of the Union’s members, described how the rise in contract and outsourced labour has created a workforce vulnerable to sudden job loss, inadequate safety measures, and limited benefits – even as mining companies reap record profits from high global gold prices.

“These workers descend into mines every day, operate heavy machinery, and contribute directly to Ghana’s wealth,” Mr. Gbana said. “Yet many lack the basic security and protections that permanent employees enjoy. This cannot continue.”

The GMWU’s appeal highlights real-life consequences: higher accident rates due to fragmented oversight, weakened union representation, and growing insecurity among families dependent on mining incomes. The Union argues that updating the law would promote safer workplaces, fairer contracts, and greater stability for workers and their communities.

Having raised these concerns for several years, the GMWU is now urging Parliament, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and mining employers to engage in meaningful dialogue and deliver reforms that reflect 21st-century realities.

“Our members are the backbone of this industry,” Mr. Gbana emphasised. “Strengthening labour laws is not just about justice for workers – it’s about building a sustainable and responsible mining sector that benefits all Ghanaians.”

The Union remains committed to constructive advocacy and stands ready to support the reform process with expertise from the frontline.
